Dunkirk: A simple war story, on a rescue mission, Nolan overcomplicates

Took awhile for me to get to Dunkirk. I was much more interested in seeing other films. I’m sick of WW2 films, but since it is in the running for 2017 Best Picture this award season, I watched

😤. I’ll start with the good.

I love minimal dialogues in films where sound and score makes the film. It makes the audience feel what the characters are feeling. It’s one of those films. The shell sounds, gunfire, bombs were so intense, that film will give you a little sense of the soldiers’ feelings and their shell shock/PTSD. Sound and score is fantastic. It’s right behind Blade Runner 2049 for best Film Sound and Score of 2017. Hans Zimmer’s music is on a roll this year.

Storyline was a bit confusing at first, but as I continued to watch, it finally made sense. Nolan editing and presenting the film in a non-linear manner, with the 3 plots: one by land (1 week out), one by sea (1 day out), and one by air (1 hr out), shows how each played their roles in the evacuation effort. Now if you piece the 3 plots in a linear manner, it’s just another WW2 rescue mission film. It’s a simple story, but Nolan complicates it in the editing.

Surprise they didn’t sneak in Tom Hanks and Matt Damon somewhere in the film.

I despise sappy predictable endings. So stupid.

With 70% film done in 70mm IMAX, cinematography was cool. It worked well with aerial shots. Bigger sometimes is better, especially if you want to make a big Ben-Hur visual type film for the audience, but with the lackluster storyline, sappy predictable ending, over complicated editing making you lose your place to what ship the characters are in and which plot, film like I said, was just an another WW2 rescue mission film, so overrated.

I give the film a

B-

I gave it a generous grade because a few of the hot Peaky Blinders were in it.

Also, what’s with Tom Hardy with face masks in his films? He has nice kissable lips. Show it to us love.
